"The Bach and Rossini went off smoothly (Gerald Ranck was the harpsichordist), and Bottesini's wonderfully preposterous showpiece made for a rousing finish. Jerome Butler, the superb double bass soloist, climbed fearlessly into his extreme treble register, even breaking into a smile as his fingers danced dangerously close to the bow."

Paul Ramsier: Four Ramsier Favorites DVD
Stickley Music announces a major landmark, 60-minute, DVD performed by Jerome Butler, bass, and Paul Ramsier, piano. FOUR RAMSIER FAVORITES includes: Three Lyric Pieces; Silent Movie; The Low-Note Blues and Divertimento Concertante on a Theme of Couperin. These four bass standards are recorded on orchestra-tuned bass, and are now published in both bass tunings. Butler and Ramsier rehearsed for a year and recorded the DVD in Sarasota Orchestra’s Holley Hall without retakes, so as to achieve the spontaneity of a live performance. This project was assisted by the ISB, which provided the means for sponsors to contribute to its funding.

This special Contrabass Conversations episode features an interview with composer Paul Ramsier. Though Paul is particularly well-known for his collaborations with Gary Karr, he continues to remain quite active as a composer and has a number of interesting projects in the works.
Throughout this interview, you will hear excerpts from Divertimento and Silent Movie - two of Paul's most popular compositions. These excerpts come featuring double bassist Jerome Butler on bass. We also discuss Bass Tunes, Paul's excellent volume of duets for young bassists and a book that I frequently use with my own students.
